It’s become a much anticipated annual event for Colorado River hot boaters — the Billy-B River Rocket showdown at Pirate Cove Resort in mid-September.  Needles, California is rapidly assuming the role as the headquarters for everything fast, loud and with a V-drive.  And master painter/artist Billy-B of Krazy Kolors seems to have the secret formula needed to attract the cream of the crop when it comes to classic hot boats.

The late summer get-together isn’t just a local gathering, however, in 2012 hot boat fans from as far away as a thousand miles trailered in to take part in the one day festivities.  Boats started arriving as early as 9am, and an hour later the beach was lined with 75 or more rockets.

Although hot laps aren’t allowed in the Pirate Cove lagoon, it’s only a short idle out to the main body of the river where there’s no such thing as a speed limit.  If your idea of fun is browsing over a half-mile of beach lined hot boats and reclining in the shade of a first-class waterfront bar/restaurant with a tall cold-one in your grasp, the River Rocket showdown is right up your alley.

The 2013 event is scheduled for Saturday, September 21 at Pirate Cove Resort, just 10 miles south of Needles — exit Park Moabi Road.  There’s no charge for parking or admission. Highly recommended!
